Speaking in parliament a day after police raids in and around
London which foiled an apparent bombing plot, Blair said his government would
"fight terrorism in every way". He welcomed the letter sent by the Muslim
Council of Britain to all of Britain's mosques, saying that it made clear that
terrorism "has nothing to do with the true message of Islam". "The threat from
terrorism affects every family in this country, Muslim and non-Muslim alike," he
said. "It is right that we all work together to defeat this threat and do not
allow the extremists to divide us."
Eight men, aged 17 to 32, were arrested in Tuesday's raids. Police
said they were all British, while press reports indicated that they came from
families of Pakistani origin.
