Man arrested during Canadian anti-terror raids

Canadian police have arrested a man accused of working with a terrorist group in Ottawa and London, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said Tuesday.

Mohammad Momin Khawaja was charged under an anti-terrorism law with aiding a terrorist group and facilitating terrorist activity in both Ottawa and London between November 10 and Monday, the RCMP said in a statement. "The actions taken yesterday were directed at criminal activity with respect to national security," the statement said. The RCMP canceled a news conference after a court order blocked them from releasing further details.

Khawaja was arrested at his workplace, after heavily armed police searched both his office and his home. Canadian media reported that Khawaja is a young computer specialist who currently has a contract with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. His 26-year-old brother, Qasim Khawaja, said the police raids had "traumatized" his family. Their father, Mahboob A. Khawaja, is a university professor currently teaching in Saudi Arabia.  Earlier, Khawaja condemned the raids in a telephone interview from Saudi Arabia, the Ottawa Citizen reported. "It's nothing more than a hoax to create embarrassment," he said. Khawaja denied allegations that any of his four sons had been involved in bomb making at his house, the Citizen said.

In London, British police arrested eight men and confiscated half a tonne of fertilizer that could be used to make explosives in dawn raids that apparently foiled a terrorist bomb plot.
